While I was still young, before I went on my travels,
I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. (Ecclesiasticus 51:13)
Surely this is the beginning of wisdom – to know that you need it! Who better from whom to seek it but the source of all wisdom, God. In the Christian tradition, Wisdom is another name for the Holy Spirit. Thus the name of Constantine’s church in (now) Istanbul – Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia). Like many things on the journey of faith, wisdom comes to us, in time, from hard-won experience.
Young people can display wisdom – as much as it is generally associated with those who are older. Our job is to encourage young people to foster wisdom through reflecting upon their experience and listening to their hearts in prayer. It is there that the God who loved them into life will speak to them and nurture them so that they can be all that they were made to be.
Have a great week!
